I grew up in sunny Townsville, North Queensland, where I learnt early on the value of hard work, independence and creating my own path in life. Raised by my mum and stepdad, I watched them over the years juggle their full-time work commitments while simultaneously renovating and flipping homes for profit – which sometimes meant sleeping in a room with no walls for a few weeks. After 5 house renovations, the end results were always worth the endless effort they poured in and these experiences not only shaped my upbringing, but also instilled in me a strong appreciation for resilience, discipline and planning for the future.
I started my working-life during high school, at the ripe young age of 14, and started building my life skills within the hospitality industry, working in fast food restaurants, which eventually evolved into café’s, restaurants and bars, all while still completing my high school studies.
By the end of 2012, I had graduated from high school, eager to start my adult-hood and gain my independence, and was on a pathway to become a Registered Nurse, but chose to take a break from studying, so that I could take some time to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. I continued the endless cycle of working in hospitality, trying to balance a social life within the opposite working schedules that my friends had, and also lived out of home for a short period when my parents moved over to Perth for my dad to continue his work within the mining industry.
But, just like any almost-19 years old girl who thought she knew everything, I learnt the importance of having family close by, and that the change I actually needed in my life would require me to get even further out of my comfort zone, and leave my home town for good. In February of 2014, I packed up my old life into a suitcase, said goodbye to my friends and moved “out-west” to Perth to be closer to my family again. It was a defining moment in my life and pushed me well outside of my comfort zone, but it became of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only did I get the fresh start that I needed, but it also ended up leading me to reconnect with my now husband, who I had originally met 5 years prior, while working together in Townsville.
Within my first week of living in Perth, I found a new job, and continued to work within hospitality as a barista for another 18 months, all while rebuilding my life from the ground up and embracing the unexpected ways that life ended up falling into place. As time went on, I began to recognize a shift within myself. Even though hospitality had given me invaluable life skills and a solid work-ethic, I felt my passion for the industry start to fade. I knew I was ready to move beyond it and begin building a more solid and long-term career path that sparked my ambitions and sense of purpose in my life.
By mid-2015, I was able to utilize my already-established connections, that had been built by me being “The Best” caffeine supplier/life saver to the corporate workers around Perth CBD. I was referred to a nearby finance company for a job opening and soon started working as a customer service officer and was able leave the daily (coffee) grind for good. After almost 7 years of early mornings, late nights and always somehow smelling like coffee, I took this opportunity as sign that it was time to hang up my (metaphorical) apron, and start on my next chapter.
With this opportunity, I had my first foot in the door within a new industry and from there, I was able to to build up my experience, knowledge and confidence within the financial services and customer service support industry. By February 2019 I was working in the Superannuation industry for a WA State Government superannuation fund, where I quickly progressed from handling general enquiries, onto more complex work within the insurance claims team. Working within the Insurance team, helped me understand that that within any work I do ( and in any industry), my true passion has always been centered around building strong connections and trust with my clients, to help support them and to get the outcomes they deserve.
With the unwavering support and love from my family, my Husband and our 4 cats, I have been able to build and progress my career within an industry that I am intensely passionate about. Outside of work and in my spare time I enjoy either reading a good book in bed, seeing live music, drinking iced lattes, a good gym session, or spending time with my family and friends.
I joined the Blueprint Wealth team in 2022 as a Client Relationship Manager. I have since progressed into my current role as an Associate Adviser, which has inspired me to commence my studies, and work towards becoming a Financial Planner.
